2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Test Drive Review

Just because a car is practical and versatile doesn’t mean it has to be boring— the 2018 Nissan Maxima is proof that excitement and performance can easily coexist with utility and value.

Featuring characteristics usually found on sports cars, this flagship vehicle is perfect for the driving enthusiast who may need more passenger and cargo capability.

2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Exterior

Nissan’s “4-Door Sports Car” continues to turn heads with its luxurious and athletic design language, which features the brand’s signature V-Motion Grille and unique “floating roof.”

At the front of the Maxima’s low, streamlined form, you’ll find new black accents for the 2018 model year, as well as boomerang-style headlights with standard LED daytime running lights. A sweeping character line travels beneath blacked-out A-, B-, and C-pillars to bring your eyes back towards the two-piece taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips.

Our test model came painted in a new premium color, Carnelian Red, and also featured a standard dual panel panoramic moonroof. 18-inch machined aluminum wheels complete the performance-focused look of the Platinum trim.

Other exterior features include heated power outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down, intelligent auto headlights, rain detecting windshield wipers, and front fog lights.

In terms of visual appeal, the 2018 Maxima boasts one of the most dynamic designs found on a full-size sedan, and definitely stands out from the crowd.

2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Interior

Luxury and style come together in the performance-focused cabin of the 2018 Maxima thanks to the use of premium materials and an overall finish that’s worthy of much more expensive vehicles.

Genuine stitching can be found throughout the interior, as well as premium Ascot leather-appointed seating surface with diamond-quilted leather inserts. Our Platinum test model also featured Mahogany wood-tone faceted finishers and Alcantara accents.

For the driver, an automatic entry/exit system allows for easy access by raising the steering wheel and moving the “Zero Gravity” seat all the way back. These unique front seats feature a special three-layer foam design for extra softness, and come standard with heating and cooling on the Platinum trim.

When it comes to infotainment, few systems offer as much capability as the Maxima’s NissanConnect with navigation. The 2018 model year comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trims, along with an 8-inch color touchscreen display. SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity, live traffic data, connected apps, and more are available at your fingertips or via voice control.

You can use the Display Command controls on the center console or shortcut buttons on the steering wheel to quickly navigate the entertainment system while keeping your focus on the road. The 7-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display in the instrument cluster also shows additional data, including navigation directions, helping you stay informed in the most efficient manner.

Our notable interior features include an 11-speaker Bose sound system, active noise cancellation, dual-zone automatic temperature control, 60/40 split fold down rear seats, four USB ports, and a HomeLink universal transceiver.

With so many premium amenities and entertainment options, you may find yourself actually taking the long route home more often.

2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Performance

The 2018 Maxima gets its sports car characteristics from a potent 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque, while an Xtronic Transmission helps to deliver impressive acceleration and a wide, usable power band.

For those times when you want to get a bit more spirited, the Drive Mode Selector enhances the Maxima’s athleticism with improved throttle response, more aggressive transmission tuning, and increased steering weight.

Bringing all of this together, with a strong subframe and sport-tuned suspension, the 2018 Maxima delivers a confident and nimble driving experience that lives up to its “4-Door Sports Car” nickname — you can tackle twisting canyon roads with ease thanks to the vehicle’s stability and expert management of weight transfer, made possible by ZF Sachs dampers and large front and rear stabilizer bars.

Completing your connection to the road is a speed-sensitive hydro-electric power-assisted steering system that provides excellent feedback and precise control through tight corners.

Fuel economy for the 2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum is an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway**.

2018 Nissan Maxima Platinum Safety
