As the FIAT brand continues to grow in North America, so does its lineup, which now includes the revival of an automotive icon, the 124 Spider.

This ultimate roadster blends Italian style with impressive driving agility to bring about one of the most exciting and dynamic on-road experiences available today.

2018 FIAT 124 Spider Classica Exterior

Taking a big departure from the rest of the FIAT lineup, the 2018 124 Spider Classica features a low-slung roadster layout that pays homage to the original 124 from nearly 50 years ago.

Designed in Turin, Italy, the new 124 Spider is a modern interpretation of a classic with athletic proportions and dramatic lines. The hexagonal upper grille along with the long, sloping hood is reminiscent of the historic 1966 Spider.

Our test model came painted in a luxurious Blu Scuro Dark Blue, and was paired with a black cloth soft top along with silver 16-inch aluminum wheels. Bi-function projector headlamps with daytime running lights sit on either side of the hood’s “power domes,” while angular LED taillamps finish out the rear, just above dual exhaust tips.

The manual convertible top folds down in just seconds, and was designed for one-handed operation so you can easily go from open to closed while waiting at a traffic light.

It only takes one glance to know that the 2018 124 Spider Classica is all about having a good time, and those familiar with the original will really appreciate its inspired design.

2018 FIAT 124 Spider Classica Interior

With maximum driving pleasure at the top of its list, the interior of the 124 Spider Classica keeps things simple with modern amenities and a thoughtful configuration.

Leather can be found on the steering wheel and shift knob, while a soft-touch material adorns the upper instrument panel to give a premium feel. Our Classica test model featured cloth sport seats, with 6-way manual adjustment for the driver and 4-way adjustment for the passenger.

Sitting on the center of the dashboard is a 7-inch display for the navigation-capable (dealer installed) FIAT Connect 7.0 infotainment system, featuring Bluetooth connectivity, streaming music apps, and access to a variety of vehicle settings. This available option from the Technology Group adds voice commands, satellite radio, and a multimedia command knob on the center console for intuitive, look-free controls.

When cruising with the top closed, the 124 Spider Classica offers a quiet environment, utilizing a variety of acoustic and insulation treatments to keep out unwanted sounds and vibrations. Open-air driving is just as enjoyable thanks to the windshield carrying wind over the passenger area, and the vehicle’s aerodynamic design which minimizes the amount of turbulent air entering the cabin when the windows are down.

Additional interior highlights include headrest speakers, black molded rollbar cover, rear console lockable storage, two removable cup holders, and best-in-class trunk space.

2018 FIAT 124 Spider Classica Performance

We think it’s safe to say that most people will instantly fall in love with the 124 Spider’s rear-wheel drive characteristics and go kart-like handling. A 1.4-liter I4 MultiAir Turbo engine powered our Classica test model, producing 164 horsepower and 184 lb. ft of torque.

This may not sound like a lot on paper, but when it’s complemented by a lightweight frame, sport-tuned suspension, and a balanced weight distribution, the result is an extremely nimble and rewarding driving experience that more than makes up for any lack of horsepower.

Electric power steering offers responsive feedback and effortless driver input, while a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setup provides improved stability during braking and cornering.

There are few vehicles that can offer as much driving excitement as the 2018 124 Spider Classica, especially in an accessible and usable range that’s safe for public roads.

Fuel economy for the 2018 FIAT 124 Spider Classica is an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway**.
