Power and Handling: 2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring Test Drive

Convertibles have long been America’s ultimate expression of fun and freedom, but they often feel like someone retro-fitted a coupe with a soft-top as an afterthought.

This isn’t the case with the 2018 Buick Cascada, though. Featuring a ground-up design as a convertible from the get-go, everything about this car is purposeful and attractive.

Get acquainted with the re-invented Buick brand by taking a closer look at the value and excitement of the 2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring.

2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring Exterior

Featuring short overhangs and a sleek, aerodynamic form, the 2018 Cascada is the perfect vehicle for wind-in-your-hair adventures. And since the Cascada is specifically designed as a drop-top only, its proportions and lines look great no matter how the fabric roof is situated.

Our Sport Touring test model came painted in a luxurious and eye-catching Carrageen, and was paired with a black soft-top that features thermal and acoustic insulation. Standard 20-inch twin-spoke aluminum wheels with black pockets further emphasized the Cascada’s performance-focused design.

Like a sharp blade slicing through the air, the 2018 Cascada looks simultaneously elegant and athletic. Every sculpted body line flows from the signature Buick logo to produce a dynamic silhouette that feels fast even when sitting still. And don’t just take it from us — we received numerous thumbs up and nods of approval during our time with the Cascada.

Additional exterior features include fog lamps, heated outside mirrors, chrome accents, and articulating headlamps with automatic leveling.

2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring Interior

Although the 2018 Cascada’s exterior design gives off a compact essence, the passenger cabin is anything but small. The thoughtfully-crafted interior easily accommodates a 6-feet tall driver with room to spare, even when the soft-top is closed.

Combining posh with performance, all seating surfaces in our 2018 Cascada test model were wrapped in heat-reflective, Light Neutral perforated leather, and the rest of the cabin featured black leather, chrome, and carbon fiber-inspired accents. Front passengers get to enjoy heated seats with 8-way powered adjustment, while rear passengers benefit from a one-touch, easy entry system.

At the center of the premium wrap-around dashboard, you’ll find the highlight of the interior: a Buick infotainment System with Navigation. This user-friendly portal provides access to music, connected apps, vehicle settings, and more, all through a vibrant 7-inch color touch screen. To make operation even easier while driving, the Cascada also offers a large selection of physical shortcut buttons so you don’t have to fumble through multiple menu screens. Apple Siri Eyes Free is now standard on the 2018 model for expanded, distraction-free connectivity options.

Cruising in the Cascada is one of the most rewarding experiences — you’ll feel free and open all while still wrapped in luxury and comfort. Thanks to the angular windshield design and two available windscreens, unwanted wind is kept on the outside so your in-cabin climate remains unaffected.

Other notable interior highlights include an electronic safety belt presenter, 50/50 split rear space, 7-speaker audio system, sport pedals, and heated steering wheel.

2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring Performance

Every 2018 Cascada is powered by a peppy 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and up to 221 lb-ft of torque (with overboost). Don’t let the relatively small engine size fool you, though. When paired with the Hydra-Matic 6T45 six-speed automatic transmission and standard sport-tuned suspension, the result is an exhilarating driving experience that had us grinning from ear to ear.

Since the Cascada was originally conceived as a convertible, its chassis provides ample structural rigidity as well as enhanced responsiveness and ride control. This contributes to the vehicle’s high levels of agility and grip, which ultimately inspires confidence in the driver.

Accelerations were quick, throttle response was instant, and the combination of power plus handling made this sporty drop-top feel perfectly balanced.

Overall, we found the Cascada to be lively and athletic, all the while remaining composed and predictable — perfect for times when you just want to enjoy the breeze.

Fuel economy for the 2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring is an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway**.

2018 Buick Cascada Sport Touring Safety

Contributing to the 2018 Cascada’s 5-star overall safety rating is a long list of standard equipment that includes StabiliTrak (stability control plus traction control), anti-lock brakes, advanced air bags, rear vision camera, and tire pressure monitor.

Our test model also came equipped with front and rear parking assist, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning.
