2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro Test Drive Review

The Audi S4, one of the most exciting sedans in today’s market, returns for the 2018 model year with even more performance and luxury refinements.

Touting a new engine and a more aggressive stance, this four-door sport sedan is ready for any task.

Take in everything the S4 has to offer with a closer look at our 2018 Audi S4 3.0T quattro test model.

2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro Exterior

With the 2018 S4, the classic sedan form-factor that Audi is known for continues to receive refinements after last year’s redesign.

The signature Platinum Gray Singleframe grille makes its return with a more horizontal and contoured shape to match the S4’s wider, sportier proportions. Pronounced wheel arches and flowing character lines further hint at the performance that lies beneath the new clamshell hood.

Differentiating the S4 from its A4 counterpart are a number of sporty design elements, like quad exhaust tips, aluminum-optic side mirror housings, and a body-colored lip spoiler on the trunk lid.

Our test model came painted in a luxuriously deep Navarra Blue metallic paint, accented by optional 19-inch wheels in contrasting gray.

Other exterior highlights include full LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED taillights with dynamic turn signals, power folding exterior mirrors, and a power sunroof. The optional S sport package adds red brake calipers for a bit of extra flair.

2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro Interior

The performance-aligned design continues on the inside as the 2018 S4 welcomes you with premium materials and a driver-focused cockpit.

The first thing that catches everyone’s attention is the standard diamond stitched S sport seats with power side bolsters and massage function. These bucket seats are comfortable, supportive, and luxurious to the touch. The rear 40/20/40 split-folding seats also receive the diamond stitched treatment.

Our test model’s Rotor Gray interior was upgraded with Fine Nappa leather and complemented with Alcantara inserts as well as Carbon Atlas inlays throughout the wraparound dash and center console.

And for those who like to drive while resting a hand on the gear selector, simply stretching out your fingers gives you full access to Audi’s MMI Touch controls, allowing you to command an extremely intuitive in-car infotainment system with simple gestures.

Ergonomically placed shortcut buttons, scroll wheel and touchpad offer quick access to satellite radio, GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, smartphone-powered apps, and more. If you prefer to have both hands on the wheel, most of the S4’s functions can be controlled via voice commands.

For information delivery, there’s an 8.3-inch color display at the center of the dash, but more impressive is the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit that replaces the traditional instrument cluster with an NVIDIA-powered digital display. This is where the driver can stay in touch with various aspects of the vehicle’s performance and entertainment options, in addition to an enhanced navigation experience thanks to Google Maps with satellite imagery.

Other interior highlights include a Bang & Olufsen sound system, LED interior lighting, three-zone automatic climate control, heated steering wheel and rear seats (Cold weather package), and dual pane acoustic glass for the front side windows (Prestige package).

The cabin of the 2018 S4 is a world of comfort, convenience, and the latest technology, and you’ll find it hard to leave it all behind once you’ve reached your destination.

2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro Performance

Staying true to Audi’s S line heritage, the 2018 S4 features a very capable 3.0-liter TFSI V6 engine that produces 354 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. What’s even more impressive is that peak torque is achieved at an incredibly low 1,370 RPM, making the S4 quicker than other cars with more horsepower.

New for the 2018 model year, an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission is now standard, and has been optimized to take advantage of the low-end torque produced by the new engine.

And giving the S4 its precise handling dynamics is Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system, which uses active torque distribution to ensure maximum grip at all times. Our test model also featured additional performance enhancements with a sport rear differential as part of the available S sport package. This upgraded rear differential can send almost all of the torque to one rear wheel for improved cornering ability.

The S4’s front and rear suspension have also been redesigned for more versatility, and its characteristics can be adjusted via Audi drive select. Four modes — comfort, auto, dynamic and individual — change damper control as well as steering weight, gear shift points, and throttle response.

Piloting the 2018 S4 is a very rewarding experience. Whether you’re out for a spirited drive, a daily commute, or a long-distance trek, the S4 has the flexibility to offer exactly what you need in terms of comfort, performance, and handling.

Fuel economy for the 2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro is an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway**.

2018 Audi S4 Sedan 3.0T quattro Safety

A leader in the industry for vehicle safety, the 2018 S4 features a plethora of advanced driver assistance features included as standard equipment.

Our test model featured eight advanced airbags, anti-lock braking system with Brake Assist, Audi pre sense basic and pre sense city (low speed collision assist), electronic stabilization control, rearview camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The optional Prestige package adds a full color head up display, top view camera system, and Audi side assist with pre sense rear. Also included on our test model was adaptive cruise control and Audi active lane assist.

All of these systems work together to give you a worry-free driving experience that offers early warnings of unwanted scenarios. The adaptive cruise control is by far our favorite feature because of its ability to handle stop-and-go traffic during our daily commute.
