Alfa Romeo has been working on its return to the United States for the good part of the past decade. It all started with an extremely limited allocation of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione V8 supercar and the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider. Following that little tease of the Italian automaker’s return, the brand released the mid-engined and lightweight 4C Coupe and the convertible 4C Spider. Finally, Alfa Romeo brought the Ferrari-derived V6-powered Giulia Quadrifoglio and its 505 horsepower.
All these aforementioned Alfa Rome models are quite limited and pretty expensive. However, Alfa Romeo is now hoping to take on the mainstream luxury segment with a conventional version of the Giulia that is powered by a four-cylinder turbo engine. Can the Alfa Romeo Giulia take some market share away from the likes of the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class? Let’s find out in our test drive review of the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T.
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Exterior
There is no doubt that the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia is very beautiful. Like most other models from the Italian automaker, the Giulia is just a very classy and chic sedan.
The Alfa Romeo’s seductive front end is highlighted by the brand’s signature grille (which is often referred to as the ‘Star Wars Grille’ because it resembles Darth Vader’s mask). The exterior is further highlighted by fashionable headlamps, large air intakes, elegant lines – all which exude a sensuous emotion. However, the design element that stands out the most to us are the wheels. The 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia comes with a range of nine available wheels designs that range from 17-inches to 19-inches. Our favorite by far is the 19-inch five-hole design that pays homage to Alfa Romeo’s heritage.
Size wise, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia sits on a wheelbase that measures 111-inches with an overall length of 182.8-inches. The width stretches a total of 73.2-inches while the height stands at 57.1-inches.
Overall, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of the most smooth looking luxury mid-size sedans in the segment. It offers a fresh look at a segment that is more concerned with being either too luxurious or too sporty. The Alfa Romeo Giulia, on the other hand, focuses on beauty and charm.
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Interior
The beauty and grace continue on the inside of the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia. Alfa’s designers went for a more simplistic design that is focused on the driver. There is a wide use of high-quality materials including wood or carbon fiber, leathers with accent stitching, aluminum or wood trims, and a stylish Formula-1 inspired steering wheel that features an engine start button.
Standard options for the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia include dual-zone climate control, an infotainment system that is housed in a 6.5-inch display, a rotary controller, Bluetooth (audio and phone connectivity), USB input, 10-way power driver and front-passenger leather seats, and an eight-speaker audio system. Our test model came with the upgraded 8.8-inch widescreen display with navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, an upgraded Harman Kardon premium sound system with 14 speakers, heated seats, heated steering, and much more.
Interior space wise, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia offers a roomy cabin with 42.4-inches of front legroom and 35.1-inches of rear legroom.
Overall we were awed by the simplicity of the interior along with the comfort and elegance that comes along with it. There aren’t any swooping lines or added heft to the dashboard. It gives you all the basics within reach while encompassing you in the lap of luxury.
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Performance
This is where things get fun. Power for the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine that makes a total of 280 horsepower with a maximum torque of 306 lb-ft. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, 0 to 60 mph comes in just 5.1 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph.
The near-perfect 50/50 weight balance gives the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia amazing handling dynamics and you feel that no matter how fast you throw this thing into turns. The overall drive quality is remarkably poised and comfortable.
The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia at 24/33 mpg* for the rear wheel drive model and 21/31 mpg* for the all-wheel-drive model.
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Safety
There are a long list of safety features that come standard with the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia, however, you can also add on a range of driver assist technologies that include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beam control, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and more.
2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia Overall
