2018 Acura TLX A-Spec Test Drive Review

Acura unveiled the all-new 2018 TLX at the 2017 New York Auto Show – but this time around the luxury brand brought along the much-anticipated Acura TLX A-Spec. The 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec takes the model towards a sportier direction and it really does go beyond than just looking sporty.

“We’re enhancing the already outstanding dynamic performance of the Acura TLX by carrying our Precision Crafted Performance direction through to the exterior design,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. “The addition of the new A-Spec further advances the TLX to a more distinctive position in the segment and enhances its appeal to a more performance oriented buyer.”

The Honda-owned luxury brand has built its customer base by offering vehicles that are about luxury and comfort as much as they are about reliability. Over the years, the Acura TLX has earned a lot of respect from those looking for an affordable luxury sedan as their daily driver. However, the TLX A-Spec brings the already successful model closer to the sport realm.

The 2018 Acura TLX has been quite significantly redesigned – however, it is still instantly recognizable as a TLX. The overall styling of the model has become a perfect balance between luxury and sport.

The 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec – focuses its efforts on sporty and sleek looks. With that in mind, the 2018 TLX A-Spec adds some model exclusive features like a matte-black diamond pentagon grille with drake chrome surround, a broad center air opening, large air intakes with round LED fog lights, and a darker shadow for the signature Acura Jewel Eye LED headlamps. The 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec also gets model exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels that are finished in a dark Shark Gray color and flared side sills for a more aggressive stance. Heading over to the rear of the Acura TLX A-Spec you’ll notice a black lip spoiler, ‘smoked-out’ LED taillights, a lower diffuser, and 4-inch round dual exhaust finishers.

The 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec sits on a wheelbase that measures 109.3-inches with an overall length of 191-inches. The width comes in at 73-inches while the height stands at 57-inches.

Overall, the 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec is one of the best-looking sedans in its segment and definitely gives the TLX something to be tougher about.

The interior of the 2018 Acura TLX hasn’t really changed over the last model year. Things are still quite family to any Acura or Honda owner and that’s not entirely a bad thing. Acura’s lineup has always been known for comfort, luxury, and simplicity – and they continue on with that philosophy for their 2018 model year vehicles.

The 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec, however, does have some model-exclusive features including leather seats with additional bolstering for more support, red meter highlights, brushed aluminum interior trim, along with a very thick sport steering wheel. The TLX A-Spec also features two exclusive interior colors including Red or Block leather with Alcantara inserts. The Acura TLX A-Spec also comes with some features from the Advance Package including heated and ventilated front seats, red LED ambient lighting and a wireless charging pad.

Other standard features include dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth connectivity (phone and audio streaming), USB ports, keyless entry with push-button start, a 10-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, navigation, remote engine start, and more

Interior dimensions-wise, the 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec offers front row passengers a total of 42.6-inches of legroom and rear passengers a total of 34.5-inches of legroom.

While the 2018 Acura TLX is offered with a four-cylinder and a V6 engine, the Acura TLX A-Spec only gets the V6 engine. That means power comes from a 3.5-liter V6 engine making a total of 290 horsepower with a peak torque of 267 lb-ft. The engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Now, looks aren’t the only department where things get sporty for the 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec. While the 0 to 60 mph time won’t be much different than the standard Acura TLX with a V6 engine, the TLX A-Spec gets a retuned steering and damper settings. TLX A-Spec models with SH-AWD system get quicker steering ratio for better response, a stinger spring rate, and a rear stabilizer bar.

Fuel economy for the 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec comes in at an EPA-rated 20/30 mpg* (city/highway) for the front-wheel-drive model and 20/29 mpg* for models with the SH-AWD system.

Acura has been known for offering its vehicles as standard with a range of driver assist technologies and the TLX A-Spec is no different. The model comes standard with a multi-angle rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, brake assist, hill start assist, collision mitigation braking, heads-up display, lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and much more.

This is no Acura NSX – however, for the price tag, it is definitely a luxury sports sedan we would recommend for anyone looking for something fun and reliable to drive. Prices for the 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec start at $42,800**. Visit your local AutoNation-affiliated dealer for a test drive today.
