2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport Test Drive Review

When you take legendary all-wheel drive performance and combine it with the luxury and comfort of a sedan, you get the 2017 Subaru Legacy.

Roomier and more fuel-efficient, this latest generation Legacy is a serious contender in the highly-competitive midsize sedan market.

Take a closer look at our 2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport test model and explore its award-winning performance and safety features.

2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport Exterior

Exclusive to the 2017 Legacy 2.5i Sport model are new styling features that include 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-inspired front grille, body-color rocker spoiler with chrome accent, fog light covers, and silver-finished exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals. These design elements come together for an elegant and performance-themed look that communicates both comfort and capability.

Our test model came in a rich Carbide Gray Metallic color — one of six available exterior colors for the Sport model — and included a power moonroof as part of the Legacy Sport option package.

Chrome trim pieces highlight the front grille and passenger windows, and welcoming lights illuminate the ground by the passenger doors.

The Legacy’s character lines flow softly from the front grille, passing just above the door handles, and end in a subtle rear deck lip. A single chrome exhaust tip finishes the look for the 2.5i Sport model.

2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport Interior

Ultimate comfort and convenience is what you’ll find inside the 2017 Legacy Sport, with standard features that include a leather wrapped steering wheel, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, blue contrast stitching, and so much more.

At the center of the dashboard is a beautiful STARLINK 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with CD, HD Radio, and Sirius XM satellite radio. This multimedia system also features GPS navigation, voice activated controls, and a selection of STARLINK-powered apps for receiving information on sports, weather, stocks, and fuel prices. Your smartphone can be paired via Bluetooth for expanded connectivity options like hands-free calling or additional music from Aha and Pandora.

The two-tone interior with chrome and gloss black accents is spacious and comfortable, and also flexible when it comes to cargo storage — the rear 60/40 split seats fold forward for expanded trunk space. The Legacy’s 104.6 cu. ft. of passenger volume is one of the best in the midsize sedan class.

Other notable interior features include a customizable digital display on the instrument cluster, Siri Eyes Free, and keyless access with push-button start.

2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport Performance

Under the hood of every 2017 Legacy 2.5i Sport model is Subaru’s storied 4-cylinder Boxer engine. This peppy powerplant produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, and is mated to a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for quick and confident acceleration. Spirited drivers can use the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to select gears in 6-speed manual mode.

And putting the power to the pavement with maximum traction is a symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system that uses Active Torque Split to electronically manage power distribution between the front and rear wheels. The AWD system automatically adjusts to different road and driving conditions.

As part of Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Active Torque Vectoring utilizes stability and traction control to produce more neutral driving dynamics, especially during cornering. This helps the Legacy remain predictable under a variety of driving scenarios, and gives the driver more confidence.

A front McPherson strut suspension and rear double-wishbone suspension deliver a smooth ride and handle quick direction changes with ease.

Fuel efficiency for the 2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport is an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway**.

2017 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Sport Safety

The 2017 Legacy Sport model is loaded with a variety of active and passive safety features like an advanced frontal airbag system, side-curtain and seat-side airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and Vehicle Dynamics Control.

Our test model also came equipped with the available Subaru EyeSight driver assist technology which uses a pair of cameras to scan the road ahead for obstacles or unanticipated danger. EyeSight is used for adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and sway warning, pre-collision braking, and pre-collision throttle management. The system can also apply full braking force in emergency situations.

All EyeSight equipped vehicles received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating by achieving the best possible score for front crash prevention.

Other standard safety features include a rear vision camera, LATCH system for child safety belts, and reverse automatic braking.
