2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Test Drive Review

Offered in both a 5-door hatchback and a 4-door sedan, the Subaru Impreza is one of the most versatile small cars on the market today. This is the 2017 Impreza 2.0i Premium 5-door. It comes equipped with a 2.0L boxer 4-cylinder engine with Direct Injection, all-wheel drive, room for five adults and Eyesight Driver Assist Technology to help keep you and your occupants safe.

Oh… And the price tag, that’s not bad either.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Exterior:

It’s not flashy, it’s not elegant, and it will not get you noticed when parked outside your favorite dining establishment. Instead the 2017 Subaru Impreza is smart and understated with a design philosophy that caters to those looking for practicality and usability. Subaru has always been an intelligent brand. They listen to what their customers want and then- SURPRISE! They give it to them – not a bad strategy, in my opinion.

The Impreza 5-door rides on a 106.1” wheelbase with an overall length of 175.6” making it ideal transportation for those that live in urban environments. Our Crystal Black Silica test car came equipped with 16” alloy wheels running 205/55-series Continental tires, silver finished roof rails, body colored side mirrors and active fog lamps incorporated into the lower front fascia. Large windows all around mean great outward visibility and out back a shark fin antenna and hatch mounted rear spoiler help to round out a smart exterior package.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Interior:

Aside from a few faux carbon fiber and silver accents, the interior of the 2017 Impreza 2.0i Premium feels somewhat pedestrian. However, spend some time in the cabin and you’ll soon realize that this basic layout provides the driver with everything needed without adding complications.

There is a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat (4-way for the passenger), heated front seats (optional all-weather package), 60/40-split flat-folding seat backs, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, along with easy-to-use manual controls for the HVAC system. Black cloth seat coverings are standard. The instrument cluster contains a large speedometer and tachometer with a 2.5” LCD information screen set dead center. A 6.5” multimedia display gives occupants access to Subaru Starlink, which includes such features as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Pandora, along with access to cloud-based applications such as Yelp, iHeart Radio and more. Audio, phone, Subaru Eyesight and cruise control functions can also be accessed via steering wheel mounted controls.

Cargo capacity for the Impreza 5-door comes in at 20.8 cubic-feet with the rear seats up and 55.3 cubic-feet when lowered. The large hatch opening also makes for easy loading and unloading of cargo.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Performance:

152-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, that’s the power output from the 2.0L Boxer flat four-cylinder engine with Direct-Injection. And while those aren’t huge numbers, they motivate this 5-door hatch along just fine while at the same time delivering EPA rated fuel economy numbers of 28-mpg city, 37-highway and 31-mpg* in combined driving. A Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with adaptive control and incline start assist is standard equipment on the 2.0i Premium and channels power through Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The whisper quiet engine along with a quiet interior means less fatigue on long road trips and thanks to a 13.2-gallon fuel tank, drivers can expect up to 450+ miles of range in between fill ups when driving responsibly. It must be said that CVT transmissions, like the one in our test car, have come a long way. So much so that Subaru has managed to dial in shift points that mimic a traditional automatic, resulting in one of the best CVTs we’ve ever tested. Handling and braking manners were also excellent and when you combine that with the capabilities of all-wheel drive you’ve got a car that is economical and confidence-inspiring.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Safety:

With a 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it goes without saying that the 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium is one of the safest small cars on the road today. Our vehicle was also equipped with Subaru’s optional Eyesight Driver Assist Technology, a system that monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you if you sway outside your lane, but as a whole, is there to help you avoid potentially dangerous situations. That combined with anti-lock brakes, multiple airbags throughout the cabin, a backup camera and other safety features help to ensure you arrive safe and sound to your destination.

2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium Overall:

With a base price of $21,695.00 and an “as tested” price of $24,910.00,** the 2017 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium offers great value, wonderful mileage, advanced technology and a 5-star safety rating at a very reasonable price. In short, it’s definitely worth checking one out!
