2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Test Drive Review

Made with purists in mind, yet accessible to all, the 2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow is the epitome of a sports car.

Good looks, sharp handling, and everyday usability make this vehicle both practical and fun to drive.

Remind yourself of the joys of driving with a closer look at our 2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow test model.

2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Exterior

As part of the special edition Series.Yellow trim, our test model featured an eye-catching Charlesite Yellow paint job, black 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, matte black BRZ and Subaru badging, and black side mirror housings.

These unique aesthetic elements definitely help the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow stand out on the road.

The front fascia has been redesigned to give off a wider, more aggressive look, and now sits lower to the ground for improved aerodynamic performance. Forward lighting elements — headlights, turn signals, daytime running lights, fog lights — are now all 100-percent LED, a first for Subaru. This upgrade delivers improved light output while also lowering power usage.

At the rear, you’ll find a new aluminum spoiler with body-colored sides and black finish on the horizontal surfaces. This updated aero element improves downforce on the 2017 BRZ for better control and handling.

Other exterior highlights include full LED taillights, dual power mirrors, and a new garnish above the license plate.

We think the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow is an exciting car to look at, and from all the glances we got on the road, it’s safe to say everyone else agrees too.

2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Interior

The cockpit of the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow is an ideal environment that caters to the driving enthusiast — clean layout, functional design, and distraction-free.

Our favorite feature is the pair of Alcantara-trimmed sport seats. These heated seats offer bolstering in all the right places, and keep you firmly in place during hard corners and acceleration. They also come with matching yellow stitching and feature embroidered “BRZ” lettering.

The yellow contrast stitching continues throughout the black interior, accenting the doors, dash, steering wheels, and center console. Additional styling cues include carbon fiber-inspired patterns along with chrome and silver surfaces.

Located in the center of the dash is Subaru’s 6.5-inch infotainment system that features HD radio and a CD player. This is where you’ll also access Bluetooth phone connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, STARLINK smartphone integration, vehicle settings, and more. STARLINK also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to easily add your media library and navigation to the car.

Other interior features include a plus-two style rear seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and automatic climate control with filtration.

2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Performance

This is where the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow really shines. Its peppy 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed engine loves to rev to the 7,400-RPM redline, sending 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels.

These power numbers may seem small to certain sports car enthusiasts, but don’t forget that the BRZ is also lightweight (2,785-lb base curb weight), compact, and has a low center of gravity. With an impressive power-to-weight ratio and a broad torque curve (thanks to Subaru’s Dual Active Valve Control System), this car is nimble and exciting to drive.

Add the short-throw 6-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension into the mix, and you’ll quickly realize that horsepower isn’t everything. The 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow comes standard with the new Performance Package, upgrading the chassis to include SACHS Performance front struts & shock absorbers and wider alloy wheels. A high-performance BREMBO braking system is also included as standard equipment.

Although the BRZ Series.Yellow has been tuned with track performance in mind, it’s still very comfortable and compliant as a daily-driver. In fact, it made our work commute that much more exciting as we rowed through the gears and danced high in the revs.

Cornering is especially confident and satisfying with the standard Torsen limited-slip differential and five driver-selectable modes in the Traction Control System, including a new Track mode.

If you love to drive and feel connected to your surroundings, the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow offers one of the purest on-road experiences available today.

Fuel economy for the 2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow is an EPA estimated 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway**.

2017 Subaru BRZ Series.Yellow Safety

Safety in the 2017 BRZ Series.Yellow starts with its ring-shaped reinforcement frame design, which offers enhanced crash protection.

An advanced frontal airbag system and high-strength front seat frames protect against whiplash and other head injuries.

Other safety features include Vehicle Stability Control, electronic brake-force distribution, rear vision camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and daytime running lights.
