2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab Test Drive Review

The 2017 RAM 1500 Night is RAM’s newest edition in the 1500-series fleet. Ours was big and red and came to us with blacked-out wheels and a burly exhaust note. Basically, it was like someone showing up with a full-size Hot Wheels truck and leaving it in your driveway. And while the Night Edition may just seem like an exterior package, rest assured that there is more to this shiny red truck than meets the eye.

2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab Exterior:

Let’s face it, when it comes to pickup trucks, RAM’s styling is on point. As we live in a day and age of watered down eco-friendly design, RAM has seen fit to throw convention to the wind and still design a truck that looks and feels like it was meant to get dirty. With the Night Edition, RAM has managed to not only keep that rugged styling, but infuse a sense of sportiness into it as well. Key accents found on the Night are a black honeycomb grille and body-color lift gate with black RAM lettering, blacked out badging, 20-inch black sport wheels wearing 276/60-series Goodyear Wrangler rubber and a unique sport performance hood.

The Night also comes in five different colors – Flame Red, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, Granite Crystal Metallic and Bright Silver. Being based off the RAM Sport is a good thing as well, as details like HID headlamps, aggressive lower fascia with fog lamps, optional integrated RAM Boxes in the bed and 4-corner air suspension are all included or available.

2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab Interior:

Inside the RAM you’ll find a cabin that’s one of the nicest in the business. It’s well designed, ergonomically comfortable and a joy to be in for extended drives as it truly does cater to the driver. There are also small touches that set it apart from the competition. The main dash houses large analog gauges with a 7-inch color display that allows one to customize the truck’s on-board information. Uconnect 8.4 with its 8.4-inch touchscreen is arguably one of the most intuitive systems in the business when it comes to navigation, audio, hands-free calling and apps.

RAM also does a nice job of positioning controls correctly as we found with the automatic shift knob, trailer brake control, HVAC controls and optional air-suspension settings. There’s also loads of storage throughout the cabin including (and this may seem trivial) one of the best cell phone holders out there. Front seating (power driver / manual passenger) is quite comfortable with the rear seats folding upward for additional storage space. Small LED lights have been placed in the bottom of the rear seats to help illuminate the cargo area. All the materials used are also of good quality and RAM has made great strides in regards to providing buyers with an interior that feels worthy of the sticker price.

2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab Performance:

How times have changed. It didn’t seem like that long ago pickup trucks where simply workhorses that were slow and lumbering, today though – not so much. In fact the performance of today’s trucks would make a few sportier cars think twice about running them in a straight line. Such is the case with our 2017 RAM. Under the hood was a 5.7L HEMI V8 with a MOPAR Performance cold air intake. Power is rated at 395-hp and 410 lb-ft of torque and is put down via an 8-Speed automatic transmission. A cat-back exhaust system handles the sound and it must be said that it was glorious.

Equipped with a 3.92 rear gear our RAM 1500 would sprint to 60-mph in about 7-seconds. When properly equipped it can tow up to 10,700-pounds and has a max payload capacity of 1,880-pounds along with a ground clearance of 9.4-inches. The inclusion of RAM’s 4-corner air suspension package not only gave the RAM a wonderful ride, but also came in handy when loading and unloading items from the bed.

Steering feel in the RAM was very good and the truck always felt planted regardless of the road surface. Emergency braking maneuvers were also met with zero drama. The 8-speed transmission was smooth and never once was it hunting for a gear. The rotary shift dial in the cabin does take some getting used to, however. Additional features such as a larger 32-gallon fuel tank, a trailer tow and brake control option along with other multiple convenience groups are also available.

2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab Safety:

The 1500 Night Crew Cab packs in plenty of safety features. Advanced multistage front airbags, electronic stability control, Parkview rear backup camera, side and side-curtain airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system are all standard.

Overall:

With a “base price” of $43,995.00 and an “as tested” price of $55,850.00**, the 2017 RAM 1500 Night Edition Crew Cab is not what we would call inexpensive. However, in this case you do get what you pay for in regards to a beautifully designed interior, usability and versatility, and of course, the HEMI V8. I’ve been driving lots of trucks recently and right now, this RAM – it’s my top pick for a ½-ton truck.
