2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible Test Drive Review

Beauty, maximum performance, status — these are the words that rush through your mind when you’re behind the wheel of the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible.

Jaguar pulled out all the stops when they turned the standard F-TYPE into a 200 mph ultra-high performance sports car courtesy their in-house Special Vehicle Operations team.

Get a taste of uncompromised performance and luxury with a closer look at our 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible test model.

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible Exterior

It only takes one glance at the 2017 F-TYPE SVR convertible to realize that there’s something very special going on.

The front bumper features large intake openings to allow improved airflow through the engine bay and wheel wells, while a lower front splitter channels air along the flat underbody of the car. This plus the rear diffuser and deployable carbon fiber spoiler give the SVR a lower drag coefficient as well as reduced front lift — all in the name of top speed and performance.

As you ogle the beautiful figure of the F-TYPE SVR, you’ll find heat-extracting louvers on the long, sweeping hood, hideaway door handles, lightweight 20-inch forged wheels, and quad exhaust tips.

The fabric convertible top tucks away in 12 seconds, making it easy to transform from closed to open cockpit while waiting at a traffic light or at speeds up to 30 mph.

Our test model came in a stunning Ultra Blue metallic paint that was accented with SVR badging and red brake calipers. The vehicle’s sculpted body lines and aerodynamic details not only look amazing, but are functional as well — we were turning heads everywhere we went.

The 2017 F-TYPE SVR is definitely at the top of our list of best looking sports cars available today.

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible Interior

Inside the two-seater cabin is a collection of premium materials, driver-focused design, and the latest in advanced technology.

New Performance bucket seats finished in Jet leather hug you and your passenger in all the right places, with powered adjustment including inflatable side bolsters. The redesigned seats are lighter and thinner than the previous generation, and allow for more customization range and legroom.

The highlight of the suedecloth-covered center console is Jaguar’s latest infotainment system, featuring InControl apps, navigation, smartphone connectivity, satellite radio, and more. The vibrant touchscreen also provides access to vehicle and performance settings.

Further emphasizing the bespoke experience of owning a Jaguar, our test model’s interior featured an elegant Lozenge Quilt pattern on the seats and doors in addition to blue piping and contrast stitching. An optional carbon fiber center console insert and illuminated kickplate rounded out the sporty and luxurious look of the F-TYPE’s “one-plus-one” configuration.

The vehicle’s aerodynamic design and a rear mesh screen keeps unwanted wind from entering the cabin — even with the top down, you’ll still experience the warmth, comfort, and luxury that is unique to Jaguar.

Other notable interior features include a 770-watt Meridian surround sound system, roll bars, customizable accent lighting, and heated seats and steering wheel.

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible Performance

Jaguar’s in-house Special Vehicle Operations division left very little on the table when it comes to performance for the 2017 F-TYPE SVR.

Underneath the clamshell hood lies a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that features new calibrations to deliver 575 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a lightning-fast 8-speed automatic transmission, the F-TYPE SVR can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 200 mph.

The use of lightweight materials and redesigned components allows the F-TYPE SVR to be 55 lbs lighter than the AWD F-TYPE R, with the ability to shed even more weight when optional components like the Carbon Ceramic Matrix brake system are installed.

And making sure all of this power is effectively applied to the road are wider Pirelli P Zero tires along with an optimized version of Jaguar’s on-demand all wheel drive (AWD) system. The sharp handling dynamics and enhanced grip from the advanced driveline are especially apparent in tight, high-speed cornering maneuvers.

In its normal mode, the F-TYPE SVR is quiet and compliant, taking you to your destination on a luxurious cloud. But once you pull the Dynamic mode switch, you awaken the beast inside — the suspension dampening stiffens, steering weight is increased, the rear spoiler deploys, gear shift points are modified, and active valves in the titanium exhaust open up to belt out one of the most glorious and aggressive roars we’ve ever heard.

And while the driving experience is enhanced for all of your senses in Dynamic mode, the vehicle still remains predictable and effortless to pilot — the SVR’s duality is one of its best selling points, and each individual characteristic of Dynamic mode can be turned on and off to create a tailored persona.

Other performance features include an electronic rear active differential, revised charge air coolers, torque vectoring, and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) control technology.

Fuel economy for the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible is an EPA estimated 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway**.

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible Safety

The 2017 F-TYPE SVR comes standard with a variety of advanced safety features.

Emergency brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, Dynamic Stability Control, and blind spot monitoring are just a few examples of how the F-TYPE is always looking out for you.

In the event of an accident, passenger-detecting front and side airbags along with seatbelt pretensioners work together to minimize injury. Rollover protection mounted behind each seat is standard on all F-TYPE convertible models.

A backup camera, reverse traffic detection, and parking assist system also come standard on the 2017 F-TYPE SVR.
