2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Test Drive Review

Affordable sports cars are harder and harder to come by these days, however that depends on what a sports car means to you. Yes, you can go for the likes of a Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang or even a Porsche Cayman or a BMW M4. But what if you wanted something more affordable, something more practical, and well, something just extremely fun to drive every single day of your life? You may want to look at the hot-hatch segment.

We recently got behind the wheel of the all-new 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport and were completely blown away by the affordability and the pure fun of driving this fun little hatchback. It’s practical, it has a four-cylinder turbo engine, and a six-speed manual transmission. All that checks the boxes of a fun little sports card.

Joining the already great looking lineup of the tenth-generation Civic, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback takes it all a step further with very dramatic and sharp styling. While the front-end of the Honda Civic Hatchback shares its styling cues with the Civic Sedan, from the B-pillar and back everything about the Hatchback is totally unique. The rear roofline of the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback is taller than that of the Sedan’s which makes way for class-leading cargo space.

The rear end of the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is extremely stylish and extremely dramatic with a rear roofline spoiler, LED taillights, central dual exhaust, and more. Our Honda Civic Hatchback Sport model also added an aero kit to make things a little more exciting, fog lights, black side window trim, and much more.

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback sits on a wheelbase that measures 106.3 inches with an overall length of 182.3 inches. It has an overall height of 55.7 inches and a width of 70.8 inches.

In our opinion, there is no doubt that the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is one of the sleekest looking hatchbacks currently on the market and will definitely get you thumbs up as you pass by lesser exciting looking cars on the roads.

Moving onto the inside, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback closely resembles its other Civic siblings. Our 2017 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback was completely standard but came with power auto-up/down for the front windows, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, Pandora capability, a USB/AUX connection, a five-inch LCD screen, and a rear view camera. Honestly, that was the best part about this test drive of the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport because it allowed us to concentrate on the fun this little pocket rocket had to offer.

Legroom in the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback comes in at 42.3 inches in the front and 36 inches in the back. Cargo volume comes in at 25.7 cubic feet with the rear seats in user position and 46.2 cubic feet with the rear seats down.

If you really need all the bells and whistles, then you may want to go for the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, which comes with all the options you could possibly need including dual-zone climate control, a 542-Watt premium audio system, a seven-inch high-resolution display that has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, and a range of driver safety features.

All Honda Civic Hatchback models are powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine making 175 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. The Honda Civic Hatchback Sport model takes the output rating to 180 horsepower and maximum torque of 177 lb-ft (with a six-speed manual). Mated to a CVT transmission or a six-speed manual, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport can run from zero to sixty mph in just 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph.

Driving dynamics are nothing less of exciting. The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport handles extremely well and remains quite balanced under dynamic driving maneuvers. Ride quality is very smooth for a car of this size but that is something you’re really not going to worry about while enjoying the performance this hatchback has to offer.

Fuel economy-wise, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport offers an EPA-rated 30/39 mpg (city/highway) with a six-speed manual and 30/36 mpg* with a CVT transmission.

Later down the line, Honda will offer a Civic Si Hatchback and a Civic Type-R Hatchback for those that want even more power. However, in the meantime, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport is really taking the hot-hatch segment by storm.

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback comes with a long list of standard safety features including, front airbags, front side airbags, a rearview camera, seatbelt reminders, brake assist, anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability/traction control, lower anchors and tethers for child safety seats, and much more. If you do want to take it a step further, there are additional driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, Honda LaneWatch, auto high-beam and more.

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback does not disappoint in any category. With a stylish exterior, a quality built interior, and performance that will have you smiling, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback offers a lot bang for the buck.
