2017 FIAT 500L Trekking Test Drive Review

If you love the styling of the FIAT 500, but need a bit more room for passengers and cargo, the four-door 500L may be just what you’re looking for.

With the same Italian flair and design as the original, the 2017 500L offers more of what you already love in a spacious and thoughtful package.

Check out the “500 for a family” with a closer look at our 2017 FIAT 500L Trekking test model.

2017 FIAT 500L Trekking Exterior

The 2017 500L Trekking takes the crowd-winning formula from the original FIAT 500 and adds two more doors along with sweeping panoramic views all around.

As part of the more adventurous Trekking model, rugged features have been added as standard equipment — fender flares, matte black cladding along the lower edges of the vehicle and larger 17-inch aluminum wheels give this model a dynamic look.

FIAT’s signature winged front badge is the centerpiece of the model-specific front fascia which features more vents and a bolder design than the Pop and Lounge models. There’s also plenty of available illumination with the bi-function halogen projector headlamps, high beam daytime running lamps, and fog lamps.

Our test model came fitted with the Urbana appearance package, which adds Matte Nero accents to the exterior mirrors, bezels, side sills, and body-side molding — a nice complement to the Grigio Scuro (gray metallic) exterior paint and red roof.

Other exterior features include a bright exhaust tip, power mirrors, and all-season tires.

2017 FIAT 500L Trekking Interior

As you make your way into the two-toned cabin of the 2017 500L Trekking, you’re greeted with leather bucket seats, premium materials, and a spacious setup.

The first thing that catches everyone’s attention is the 360-degree view offered by additional glass found at the A and D pillars, along with the massive dual-pane power sunroof. You get the same feeling of being in a convertible without the added wind and road noise.

Navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and travel apps can be accessed via the award-winning Uconnect 6.5 system found in the center of the premium wrapped dashboard.

This intuitive infotainment system features a vibrant 6.5-inch touchscreen along with physical shortcut buttons, and can also be controlled via voice commands or buttons on the steering wheel. This is easily one of our favorite media hubs to use because of its responsiveness and efficient layout.

Music is enjoyed through the standard Beats Premium Audio System, which also accepts USB and auxiliary connections so you can enjoy your favorite portable music player everywhere you go.

Legroom and cargo space are abundant in the 2017 FIAT 500L Trekking — the rear 60/40 split seats fold forward to provide additional cargo space, and a multi-position shelf panel provides more cargo capability and acts as a privacy cover.

Additional interior features include heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronic vehicle information center, and a chrome/leather-wrapped shift knob.

2017 FIAT 500L Trekking Performance

Powering every 2017 500L Trekking model is a peppy 1.4-liter I4 MultiAir Turbo engine that delivers 160 horsepower and best in class 184 lb.-ft. of torque.

A standard 6-speed automatic transmission keeps the 500L in its most effective operating range, with the option to manually select each gear via the drive selector.

Ride quality in the 500L is confident and comfortable thanks to KONI MacPherson front struts and rear shock absorbers with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) Technology. This setup delivers a smooth ride and plenty of traction for an overall experience that’s responsive and fun.

The 2017 500L also boasts the smallest turning diameter in its class, making u-turns and navigating tight turns a breeze. This compact 4-door is quite nimble on the road.

Fuel economy for the 2017 FIAT 500L Trekking is an EPA estimated 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway**.

2017 FIAT 500L Trekking Safety

The 2017 500L packs more than 40 available safety and security features like advanced multistage front airbags, front seat reactive head restraints, electronic stability control, and more.

Standard hill start assist takes away the anxiety of rolling backwards on an incline, and a steel safety frame helps to minimize injury in the event of a crash.

Our test model came equipped with the optional Popular Equipment Package, which adds a ParkView rear back up camera, ParkSense rear park assist system, and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Other standard safety features include side-curtain front airbags, knee-bolster airbag, LATCH ready child seat anchor system, speed control, and tire pressure monitoring display.
