2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 Test Drive Review

For those that missed the golden age of muscle cars, the 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 is here to help you relive the excitement!

The Challenger’s wildly-popular body style paired with vintage-inspired graphics and a powerful engine are sure to turn heads wherever you go.

See how the 2017 Challenger T/A 392 is jump-starting a new era of muscle cars with a closer look at our test model.

2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 Exterior

Every detail of the 2017 Challenger T/A pays homage to the original 1970 Challenger that bears the same name. The ‘70 T/A was produced for one year only to satisfy homologation requirements for the SCCA Trans-Am Series — hence “T/A.”

The Challenger’s signature gloss black front grille now sports two illuminated air-catcher headlamps, and features the classic Challenger script tucked beneath the front edge of the black satin hood. Optional hood pins gave our test model an old-school muscle car look that paired nicely with the T/A Air Grabber hood scoop.

The satin black treatment continues on the roof and trunk lid, as well as the signature T/A bodyside graphic, fuel filler door, and rear spoiler. These dark accents really stood out against the Yellow Jacket exterior paint color found on our test model, and gave the Challenger an athletic overall feel.

Other notable exterior equipment includes 20-inch forged and painted aluminum wheels wrapped in massive 275/40/ZR20 Pirelli P Zero summer tires, Rhombi 2-piece wheel center caps, high-intensity discharge headlamps, power sunroof, and 392 fender decals that hint at the powerplant under the hood.

There are few cars on the road today that look as cool as the 2017 Challenger T/A 392 — you’ll definitely be the center of attention with this factory-tuned muscle car.

2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 Interior

The vintage-inspired detailing continues in the all-black interior with a high-sill center console and driver-focused instrument panel.

Our test model came with the available Leather Interior Group, which adds heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, and Hectic Mesh interior bezels with aluminum accents. T/A scripting is also featured on the leather-appointed front seats.

The highlight of the spacious cabin is the award-winning Uconnect 8.4 NAV system, which features a new high-definition 8.4-inch touchscreen accompanied by redesigned high-resolution graphics and icons. This is where you’ll access all of your infotainment needs like SiriusXM satellite radio, GPS navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity, vehicle settings, and more.

Delivering crisp sounds and deep, rich bass is an 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with subwoofer. The Uconnect hub plus the Harman Kardon system is by far our favorite in-car entertainment solution thanks to its ease of use and full, surround sound.

The 2017 Challenger T/A offers comfortable seating for five adults, and also provides ample cargo space in the trunk that can be expanded when the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down.

2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 Performance

The 392 decal on the front fenders means that a beefy 6.4-liter HEMI V8 is nestled under the hood of the 2017 Challenger T/A, producing 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque to deliver some awesome acceleration.

The 2017 model year brings about a new active exhaust system for the HEMI V8, automatically opening valves to allow the Challenger to breathe better and also let out a glorious roar. At the front, a Mopar cold air intake system utilizes the dual air-catcher headlamps to enhance power production.

A specially-tuned Bilstein suspension system comes as standard equipment, and our test model came equipped with upgraded Brembo 6-piston high-performance front brakes to bring the Challenger to a halt in a hurry.

The on-road experience of the Challenger T/A is confident and planted thanks to the suspension, tires, and powertrain working together as a total package. The Super Track Pak adds chassis upgrades, like a 0.5-inch lower suspension and Bilstein shock absorbers, and allows the driver to customize vehicle characteristics such as steering weight, transmission programming, and suspension stiffness.

Adaptability is definitely one of the strong points of the 2017 Challenger T/A because it excels as a comfortable grand-tourer and can also carve high-speed corners at the race track.

Fuel economy for the 2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 is an EPA estimated 15 mpg city and 25 mpg highway**.

2017 Dodge Challenger T/A 392 Safety

The 2017 Dodge Challenger comes with over 70 safety and security features, and has earned a five-star overall rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the fifth time.

Standard safety features include electronic stability control, ParkSense rear park assist system, ParkView rear back-up camera, advanced multistage front airbags, active head restraints, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and more.
