2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Test Drive Review

The compact sedan market is a very competitive one in the United States. With each and every automaker setting a new benchmark with every new generation model, it’s hard for consumers to keep up and find one that best fits their needs. Outstanding exterior design, a quality built interior, and a load of technology features have become the standard norm for this segment. However, there are some automakers that are thinking outside of the box when it comes to offering variants of their compact sedans to keep their competitive edge.

General Motors has done just that with their new Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. The new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel offers performance and fuel-efficiency in one package. With a EPA-rated fuel economy of 52 mpg highway* and the ability to drive an estimated range of up to 702 miles on one tank, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is definitely a compact sedan to consider for those looking for daily commuter car. Let’s take a closer look at the all-new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel.

Exterior:

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel looks just like its gasoline sibling. The only visible difference is a blue “TD” badge on the back right of the vehicle that stands for ‘Turbo Diesel.’

Recently redesigned for the second-generation model, the new Chevrolet Cruze looks quite grown up and a bit more stylish to attract young car shoppers. The front end of the Cruze is highlighted by Chevrolet’s new split grille with dynamically styled headlamps. The rear end also receives updated design with stylish tail lamps.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel sits on a wheelbase that measures 106.3 inches with an overall length of 183.7 inches. The width comes in at 70.5 inches and the height comes in at 57.4 inches.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is only currently available as a sedan and Chevy has yet to confirm any plans of offering it as a hatchback. Of course, we would love to see the Cruze as a diesel hatchback but that all depends on how well the hatchback sells as a gasoline version first.

Interior:

Just like the exterior, the interior of the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is just like its gasoline brethren. High-quality materials, comfort seating, and advanced technology options are offered throughout the cabin.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is available in all trim-levels including Diesel Manual and Diesel Automatic. Both models come standard with all the LT features including the Chevrolet MyLink Infotainment System (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity), Bluetooth phone connectivity/audio streaming, a six-speaker sound system, OnStar 4G LTE with built-in WiFi, front and rear USB ports, cruise control, keyless start, remote start, a rearview camera, and much more. Our 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Automatic came with a bunch of extra options including heated leather seats, heated steering wheel, an upgraded Bose sound system, 8-inch touchscreen display, and range of driver assist technologies that we’ll get into a bit later. While we were lacking a navigation system in our test-drive car, we didn’t feel left out with the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Overall, the interior of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is a very comfortable place to be. Besides the extremely comfortable seats, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel offers 42 inches of front legroom and 36.1 inches of rear legroom. Headroom comes in at 38.9 inches for front-row passengers and 37.3 inches for rear passengers.

Performance:

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel, while meant to be a fuel-efficient option, is no stranger to performance. Power comes from a 1.6 liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine making 137 horsepower and a whopping 240 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a nine-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission, 0 to 60 mph comes in 8 seconds. Initial acceleration is extremely quick thanks to the massive amount of torque that pushing a 3,091 pound vehicle with a quick jolt of power.

Fuel economy-wise, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel offers an EPA-rated 31/47 mpg* (city/highway) when mated to a nine-speed automatic and 30/52 mpg* when mated to a six-speed manual. The regular gasoline model offers an EPA-rated fuel economy of 30/40 mpg*

Now, you may ask, why go for the Diesel model? In our opinion, there are two major reasons. The first one is the better fuel economy and the outstanding range of 702 miles on one tank. The second reason is that the performance on the Diesel model makes it very exciting to drive. This is one fuel efficient vehicle that doesn’t require you to forgo performance in favor of fuel efficiency. Who said that you can’t have both?

Overall, the performance of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is simply a pleasant surprise and ride quality is quite comfortable when compared to its rivals.

Safety:

Besides the standard list of safety features, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel is available with a range of driver assist technologies including rear park assist, blind spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change alert, and more.

Overall:

If you’re in the market for a compact sedan, the Chevrolet Cruze should be right on the top of the list of cars for you to test drive. However, if you’re leaning more towards fuel efficiency, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel should definitely be a strong consideration.
