2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWD Exterior:
Sitting on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and slathered in Silver Moonlight Metallic paint, the new 2017 XT5 seemingly fills the void for those looking for the “right size” CUV. Our tester came decked out with the Platinum all-wheel drive package that included large 20-inch Slurry polished aluminum wheels wearing 235/55-series all-season tires, bright and brushed aluminum roof rails, an integrated rear spoiler that extends from the roofline, front and rear stainless steel skid-plates, as well as a unique grille and exhaust system.
When compared to the now-defunct Cadillac SRX that the XT5 replaces, the difference is night and day. The highly sculpted lines have been softened, giving the XT5 a more approachable presence. A modern front end now includes free-flowing LED headlamps along with a revised front fascia and smooth door panels that are now free of tacky plastic add-ons. Out back the rear glass has also been redesigned to feel more organic, while large rear LED taillights help to round out a rather nice exterior package.
2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWD Interior:
There was a time not too long ago that Cadillac had lost their way in regards to interiors. Enter the cabin of this 2017 XTS Platinum, however, and you’ll immediately see that things have changed – drastically. Beautiful leather, brushed metal surfaces, alcantara and real wood now grace the cabin. Gap fitment is now on par with other luxury CUVs and overall, the interior is very nicely crafted.
Up front the electronically controlled heated and ventilated front seats are comfortable and provide good support. Rear passengers are also treated to heated surfaces along with their own independent dual-vent climate controls. A redesigned leather wrapped steering wheel features heat, along with a full array of buttons that control everything from the audio settings and lane departure warning, to the center set information screen that’s positioned between the large analog tachometer and speedometer.
Most of the interior functions, however, are controlled via the XT5’s CUE infotainment system, which utilizes a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen. It takes a little getting used to, but overall it works rather well. The HVAC controls positioned beneath the CUE system still have an analog feel to them and are simple to master. For those looking for cargo room, a total of 63.0 cubic-feet is available when the rear seats are folded flat, with 30.0 cubic-feet when kept up. Access is granted via the electronic rear control hatch. The Platinum package also includes a large panoramic sunroof that gives the cabin an open and airy feel.
2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWD Performance:
A 3.6L V6 with direct-injection resides under the hood and produces 310-hp and 271-lb.ft of torque through the 8-speed automatic transmission. Being equipped with optional all-wheel drive meant that our tester jumped off the line rapidly with 60-mph coming up in the high 6-second range. Once on the road the XT5 exhibits decent road manners and soaks up road imperfections with ease. Handling maneuvers were met with zero drama and it was only when pushed that the XT5 exhibited a bit of understeer. Braking performance was confidence-inspiring and falls in line with others in the class, while fuel economy is EPA rated at 26-mpg highway, 18-city and 21-mpg in combined driving*.
2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWD Safety:
With airbags throughout the cabin, anti-lock brakes, lane-keep assist, automatic braking, a 360-surround camera system, OnStar, pedestrian collision mitigation, a fabulous heads up display, blind spot monitoring and park assist, Cadillac has incorporated quite a few safety features into the XT5 to ensure a safe arrival to your destination.
2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum AWD Overall:
It’s good to see that Cadillac is taking the mid-size luxury CUV segment seriously with the 2017 XT5. A revamped interior provides a good mix of sport and luxury, while the new softer exterior draws the eye in closer. And while the XT5 Platinum AWD doesn’t come cheap (our tester stickered at $67,165.00), it’s a good feeling knowing that Cadillac is finally stepping up to the plate and re-positioning itself as a top maker of luxury vehicles.
