Audi wasn’t messing around when they created the 2017 RS 7 — it has stunning good looks, mind-blowing power, and the best on-the-go luxury amenities.
This sport sedan boasts monstrous performance, but remains gentle and effortless to control. It’s an incredible feat of engineering for Audi to achieve this unique balance.
Get a glimpse into why the RS 7 turns so many heads on the road with a closer look at our 2017 Audi RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro test model.
2017 Audi RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro Exterior
With an aggressive front fascia, sweeping character lines, and a coupe-like form-factor, the 2017 Audi RS 7 performance is one of the best looking vehicles on the road today.
The RS 7’s stunning aesthetics start with Audi’s signature Singleframe grille, which has been enhanced with honeycomb mesh inserts. The lower air intakes have also been enlarged (compared to the A7) for maximum airflow, in addition to receiving the mesh treatment.
At the rear, a body-colored deployable spoiler lies flush at the end of the powered cargo hatch, while dual oval exhaust outlets hint at the power under the hood.
Our test model came painted in an elegant Panther Black Crystal Effect, which under the right lighting, gave off a hint of dark purple. Standard on the 2017 RS 7 performance is 21-inch 5-double-arm design wheels with a titanium matte finish wrapped in massive 275/30 summer tires.
And further emphasizing the athletic prowess of the RS 7 performance is a Carbon Optic Exterior package that replaces the front splitter, side mirror housings, lower front air intakes, and rear lower valance with carbon fiber.
Last but not least, one of our favorite exterior amenities are the soft-close doors — all four doors will automatically close themselves once they’ve been gently latched. Gone are the days of having to open and reclose doors that didn’t shut properly!
Other exterior features include black window trim, silver brake calipers, power folding side mirrors, and LED headlights and taillights.
Jaws are sure to hit the floor as the 2017 Audi RS 7 drives by — it’s stylish, elegant, and bold without being too flashy.
2017 Audi RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro Interior
Only one word is needed to describe the interior of the 2017 RS 7: perfection.
Driver and passengers are greeted with leather and Alcantara RS sport seats that are both comfortable and supportive, and feature Mercato Blue stitching as part of the RS 7 performance design selection package. And complementing the accent stitchings are carbon twill blue inlays found on the doors, wrap-around dashboard, and center console.
Front and center in the cabin is a retractable 7-inch MMI display that serves as a window to all of your infotainment needs. Using the MMI controls located on the center console, you can access music, navigation, phone, connected apps, and more. Audi’s smartphone interface now supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to control your phone’s features and apps via the MMI scroll wheel or voice commands.
And because the driver’s focus should always be on the road ahead, the 2017 RS 7 makes pertinent information easily accessible via a head-up display as well as a customizable digital display in the instrument cluster. The MMI touch pad located next to the gear selector also recognizes handwriting to allow for quick inputs when using navigation or search functions.
For the rest of the passengers, four-zone automatic climate control allows everyone to have their own temperature setting while the BOSE surround sound system entertains all with crisp, rich tones and robust bass.
Other interior features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power sunroof, auto-dimming interior mirror, and 12-way power front seats with driver memory.
It’s official: the cabin of the 2017 Audi RS 7 performance is one of the most beautiful and most luxurious we’ve ever had the pleasure of being in.
2017 Audi RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro Performance
Audi’s RS line has always been known for uncompromising performance, and the 2017 RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro does not disappoint.
Under the sculpted hood lies a 4.0-liter TFSI V8 engine that produces 605 horsepower for an incredible, face-contorting good time at full throttle.
Peak torque of 516 lb-ft comes in at an impressive 1,750 RPM, and can be dialed up to 553 lb-ft with overboost at 2,500 RPM. This translates into a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top track speed of 190 mph.
Managing all of this power and torque is an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission that’s as quick as it is smooth. The gear changes in automatic mode are so swift that it just feels like one continuous sensation of thrust when accelerating. For more spirited driving sessions, pulling down on the drive selector puts the transmission programming into S mode — shift points occur later in each gear for optimum on-demand torque — and you can also go into manual mode by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
And, of course, the 2017 RS 7 performance model comes standard with Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system to make quick work of tight curves and low-traction surfaces. A sports differential shifts power between the rear wheels to minimize oversteer and understeer while standard ceramic brakes bring the RS 7 to a halt with ease.
Specially-tuned suspension featuring Audi Dynamic Ride Control provides a smooth and confident ride quality that can be customized with Audi Drive Select. Four modes — Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, and Individual — finely adjust the suspension response, as well as steering weight, transmission programming, and throttle response.
The RS 7 is so powerful and capable that we imagine driving it to be akin to piloting a luxury rocketship.
Fuel economy for the 2017 RS 7 performance 4.0T quattro is an EPA estimated 15 mpg city and 25 mpg highway**.
