2016 MINI Clubman Test Drive Review

“Charming” and “fun” are two words that immediately come to mind when discussing the 2016 MINI Clubman.

This four-door compact car takes the “MINI-ness” that made the outgoing model so popular, and improves upon it with even more premium materials, British craftsmanship, and personality.

Join us as we explore the different elements of style, safety, and performance that make the 2016 MINI Clubman standout from the saturated compact car segment.

2016 MINI Clubman Exterior

Take one look at the new 2016 MINI Clubman and you can’t help but smile at its charming good looks and adorable proportions.

As the longest and widest vehicle in the MINI lineup, the new Clubman takes the fun, sporty driving experience we’ve all come to know and love, and brings it to a larger vehicle class for improved passenger roominess, cargo space, and versatility.

In the front, MINI’s signature round headlights flank a chrome encircled grille which gives the car a fun and expressive face. On the opposite end, split rear doors that can be opened with an optional foot-activated sensor provide a very British feel to the Clubman’s overall design, and allow easy access to the large cargo area.

New for the 2016 model year is the addition of air curtains and air breathers which optimize the aerodynamic properties of the Clubman. Air curtains are formed with vertical openings in the lower inlet that selectively channel the flow of air around the wheel arches. As this less turbulent air travels along the underbody, air breathers in the rear portion of the side panels allow the redirected airflow to efficiently exit, reducing the overall drag of the car.

Those who like to add a personal touch to their car will appreciate the Clubman’s exterior paint options, offering ten body colors and four trim colors for the roof and side mirrors. Our test model came in Pepper White exterior paint with a black roof and mirror caps. And because the side-pillars come standard in black, it gave the Clubman a very sleek and stealthy look.

Whether it’s coming or going, there’s no mistaking the design, craftsmanship, and details of the 2016 MINI Clubman.

2016 MINI Clubman Interior

The interior of the 2016 MINI Clubman is where all the British craftsmanship and attention to detail really get to shine. Premium materials and world-class engineering are found throughout the spacious passenger area, and a large center instrument panel allows the Clubman to communicate pertinent information along with some playful MINI personality.

Our test model came standard with a 6.5” Visual Boost Screen, which is controlled by a dial and shortcut buttons conveniently placed near the center armrest. Operating the in-car entertainment system is intuitive and self-explanatory, especially since the Clubman uses a MINI-branded version of BMW’s iDrive.

Color cues and fun graphics from the center instrument panel indicate the car’s current drive mode as well as other information of interest, like outside temperature, fuel economy, and real-time engine power output.

With the rear seats folded down, you have access to 47.9 cu. ft. of cargo volume, about the same amount of storage you’d find in a seemingly larger compact sport utility vehicle.

Spirited drivers will also appreciate the comfort and side-bolstering provided by the Clubman’s standard Carbon Black Leatherette front seats.

2016 MINI Clubman Performance

MINI wasn’t kidding when it said the Clubman has go-kart like performance and handling. A peppy 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine delivers 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque to a lightweight, neutrally tuned chassis — point the nose where you want to go and the Clubman obliges with no complaint and minimal body roll.

Our test model featured a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission that was both rewarding and forgiving, even for the novice gear-rower. Clutch pedal operation is effortless, and a gear display in the driver’s instrument panel suggests the proper gear to be in for maximum efficiency.

An optional 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission uses navigation data for gear and shift point selection, providing increased efficiency and shift comfort. It’s like having a co-driver with you that already knows the route.

Three distinct drive modes — Sport, Mid, and Green — change the behavior of the Clubman to suit whatever mood you’re in. Sport mode increases engine and throttle response for maximum acceleration while Green mode dials everything back for optimum fuel efficiency. The center instrument panel lights up according to whichever mode is currently active, and also displays an encouraging message, like “Let’s Motor Hard!” or “Let’s MINI-malize.” It’s a nice touch that shows MINI really understands the pleasure of driving.

Fuel economy for the 2016 MINI Clubman is an EPA estimated 25 mpg city and 35 mpg highway**, and all Clubman models come standard with MINIMALISM technology that employs brake energy regeneration for additional fuel efficiency.

2016 MINI Clubman Safety

The 2016 MINI Clubman comes standard with a variety of active and passive safety systems, including eight airbags, a child seat restraint system, and tire pressure monitor.

In the event of an accident, a crash sensor system automatically unlocks the doors, turns on the hazard lights, and shuts off the fuel pump if the airbags have been deployed.

For higher severity crashes, the engine and transmission act as impact absorbers, breaking away from their mounts in an effort to divert mass and energy away from the passenger area.

These safety features plus standard traction control and an extremely strong internal frame mean that you can focus on the joys of driving knowing that you and your passengers are protected.
