2016 Ford Focus Electric Test Drive Review

With each passing year we’re seeing a greater shift towards electric vehicles. They’re not only efficient and quiet, but as the technology improves, the entry fee into this club gets lower and lower. Meet the 2016 Focus Electric: Ford’s eco-friendly hatchback that delivers urban friendly range and styling along with a budget minded price.

2016 Ford Focus Electric Exterior:

At first glance you’d be hard pressed to tell the 2016 Ford Focus Electric apart from other Focus models, as visually it’s almost identical to its petrol-powered siblings. Look closely however and you will see that there are in fact a few differences. The front end of the Electric employs a smooth hood with a steeper rake for improved aerodynamics. A revised front fascia houses a smaller grille and projector beam headlamps, while the auxiliary driving lights found in other Focus models have been discarded in favor of smooth contours. An illuminated plug-in port on the drivers’ side front fender allows access for charging.

Special 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels wearing 225/50-series low rolling resistance tires come standard, while out back we see minor differences to the tail lamps and the lack of a traditional fuel filler door. The chrome trim along the beltline is a nice touch and special “Electric” badging lets the world know that you’re environmentally friendly.

2016 Ford Focus Electric Interior:

Aside from a few minor touches the interior of the Focus Electric is essentially the same as other models. There are leather-trimmed bucket seats with heat; a leather covered shift knob, SYNC 3 voice-activated navigation and media system and Ford’s new SmartGauge with EcoGuide gauge cluster. The LCD cluster is fully configurable and provides a wealth of real-time information such as efficiency levels, range to navigation set charging stations, regeneration performance and of course speed and charge readouts. There’s also a braking coach to help you maximize mileage.

Both front and rear seating positions are comfortable and if it weren’t for a 76-mile range, you could drive hundreds of miles in a day without fatigue. Open the rear hatch and you’ll notice a large hump containing the car’s onboard charging system. It spans the width of the vehicle and sadly, does impede on storage space. Where a standard Focus comes equipped with 23.3 cubic feet of storage space, the Electric must make due with a mere 14.2. A hidden storage bin provides an extra 1.5 cubic feet totaling out to 15.7.

2016 Ford Focus Electric Performance:

Once underway drivers will find that the 107-KW electric motor has enough grunt to get the Electric to 60-mph in just under 10-seconds. Power output is rated at 143-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque and put down to the front wheels via a 1-speed direct drive transmission. Plus, with a top speed of 86-mph, the Focus Electric will zip along in traffic with no worries. Keep in mind though that the harder the accelerator is pushed, the quicker the 23.0-kWh lithium-ion battery pack will be depleted. Ford says the Electric will go about 76 miles on a full charge and can be recharged in 3.6 hours using a 240-volt outlet or 20 hours using a standard 120.

With the plug-in cord stowed neatly in the hatch, owners will find that the Electric is actually quite fun to drive. The single speed transmission provides an authoritative WOOSH and handling characteristics feel very similar to that of a standard model Focus. As with any limited mile electric range vehicle, planning is the key when traveling. Thankfully the Focus incorporates a way to find local charging stations within its SYNC 3 navigation system and thus helps those with range anxiety feel at ease when traveling.

2016 Ford Focus Electric Safety:

Some of the safety features incorporated into the Electric are dual-stage front airbags, front-seat side airbags, side-curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbag, anti-lock brakes, a standard backup camera, tire pressure monitoring, Xenon headlamps, emergency braking assist and stability control. The 2016 Ford Focus Electric also received a 5-Star safety rating from the NHTSA.
