2016 Audi A6 3.0T Test Drive Review

The A6 has been carrying the mid-size sedan flag for Audi for the better part of twenty years and with every generation it evolves for the better. 2016 continues that tradition by way of some minor styling enhancements and a bit more power over the 2015 model. 333-horsepower means a 0-60 mph sprint time of around 5.0-seconds. Quattro all-wheel drive ensures traction for changing road conditions and thanks to Audi’s acute attention to detail, occupants are cradled in what may be the nicest cabin in the mid-size sport-luxury segment. This is the 2016 Audi A6 3.0T.

2016 Audi A6 Exterior:

With the understated elegance of a secret agent, the 2016 Audi A6 is a handsome sedan that’s just at home in a hardware store parking lot as it is in front of a Michelin Star restaurant. 2016 brings about the addition of redesigned head and tail lamps (Xenons are optional), new 20” 5-double-spoke wheels in a Titanium Matte finish (Black Optic Package), and a fully blacked out grill that leads into a more aggressive front end. Chrome-tipped dual-exhaust ports are now angular in design and reside in a blacked-out lower rear fascia.

Audi also gives the consumer the option of equipping the A6 to suit their visual needs with eleven exterior color options, eight wheel choices and multiple option packages. Capable of transforming from stylish and simple, to aggressive and angry depending on the mood of the buyer, the A6 can be optioned out in a variety of ways to suit consumer needs.

2016 Audi A6 Interior:

It’s hard to find a company that does interiors better than Audi. By using top quality materials and paying extreme attention to the fit and finish, Audi creates a cabin that’s not only ergonomically friendly, but intuitive and easy to live with. The dash layout for instance employs large analog gauges that are clear and easy to read. On demand readouts about mileage, media functions and trip status are housed in the center positioned information screen, and for those looking for further ease of use, an optional heads-up display ensures that you never have to take your eyes off the road.

Adorned with Fine Grain Ash natural wood inlays, aluminum accents and leather, the cabin’s surfaces coddle passengers in a rich combination of luxury and sporty goodness. The heated and cooled power front seats provide 8-way adjustability while rear passengers are treated to their own individual climate controls and heated surfaces. A large retractable LCD screen set dead center in the dash, provides access to Audi’s Corner view camera system, navigation, SIRIUS radio and other vehicle functions. The sport seats provide all-day comfort and ample support under spirited driving conditions as well, while a trunk containing 14.1 cu.ft. of storage space ensures capacity for extended getaways.

2016 Audi A6 Performance:

With 333-hp (up 23-hp from 2015) and 325-lb-ft of torque available, the A6 sprints to 60-mph in around 5-seconds. Thanks to all-wheel drive, traction is instantaneous and the A6 pulls hard all the way up to its 6,500-rpm redline. Equipping the A6 with the optional S-line Sport Package means one now gets suspension capable of handling the 4,155-pound curb weight. Throw the car into a corner and 20-inch wheels shod with 255/35-series Pirelli tires grip with authority, while the sport suspension quells body roll and keeps the A6 firmly planted.

Overall ride quality was firmer than expected, however nicely-weighted steering and an inspiring brake pedal meant one could push the A6 with full confidence. Getting power to the wheels is a ZF eight-speed transmission that reacts according to the pressure of your right foot. Hard acceleration results in crisp, firm shifts, while normal driving is met with seamless transitions. All in all this is one of the smoothest gearboxes on the market today.

Expecting decent mileage from a car equipped with a supercharged V6 may be a bit of a stretch, however buyers will be happy to know that the A6 3.0L achieves an EPA rated 30-mpg on the highway, 20-mpg around town and 24-mpg overall. When combined with a 19.8-gallon fuel tank, that means a range of around 350 to 500 miles depending on your driving style.

It has also earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) highest rating of Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with the available Driver Assistance Package.
